Canada Blooms Show Review

March 18 - 22, 2009

Congratulations to The Garden Club of Toronto, for finally outshining Landscape Ontario at Canada Blooms. Fun, imaginative and creative are all words to describe their floral displays. It's been a long time coming, and they are well deserving of praise!

Canada Blooms

Canada Blooms, in general, is a huge undertaking. Most of us can't imagine the amount of work that is involved in creating this spectacle. Praise should be given to all those who work so hard to put on this show.

Canada Blooms

This year they combined the two magazines, Canada Blooms guide and Garden Inspiration, into one free give away souvenir. What a great idea! I even loved the free Home Depot cloth bag that it came in. In past shows I hated having to pay for admission and then having to pay for the guide.

The cafeteria was larger and cleaner this year.

I think the Family Rest Area by Barbie Presents Thumbelina on DVD is something I hadn't seen before. It looked like a nice place for families to get away from the banging noise of the playground area.

Canada Blooms

With that said, there are a few things that could be changed.

Over the last 13 years Canada Blooms has donated over $500,000. to various horticultural project across the City of Toronto. Perhaps next years' recipient could be Canada Blooms. Canada Blooms needs to reinvest in its show if it is going to make major improvements. I know the projects that have benefited in the past are worthy of help, but at what cost?

Canada Blooms

Canada Blooms needs to swallow its pride and do whatever it takes to get the Horticultural Societies to return to the show. Of the 40 plus horticultural groups within the 416 none but two, Seeds of Diversity Canada and The Botanical Artists of Canada, attended this year. Despite their presence, I don't consider Colleges, Municipalities and Hunters & Anglers to be horticultural groups.

Canada Blooms

Horticultural societies are the grass roots support of the Horticultural/Landscape industry. Their members are generous with their time, expertise and opinions. Their word of mouth has influence. Get them working for Canada Blooms again. Remember, you can always pay someone to do your publicity but you cannot pay someone to believe in you.

Canada Blooms

What is Canada Blooms saying by putting a wine bar as the centrepiece of the garden displays? There is an old barroom expression that goes, "The more you drink, the better I look, so keep drinkin'!" Was that the intention?

I don't think anyone would put an auto manufacturer as the centrepiece of a garden show so why put a beverage manufacturer there? Even Home Depot has more to do with gardening and they are in the marketplace. My suggestion: move the bar to a better location!
